Wide area of U.S. faces unusual tornado threat in January

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A wide area of the central and southeast United States faces the unusual threat of tornadoes in January over the next 12 to 18 hours as an approaching cold front clashes with unusually warm air, a meteorologist said on Tuesday.

The first tornado warning of the approaching storm was issued for western Missouri, said meteorologist Bill Bunting at the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

A warning is intended to signal residents to take cover because a tornado could be forming. A less urgent tornado watch is in effect for a region from extreme northeast Texas through virtually all of Arkansas, western Tennessee and extreme southern Illinois.

"It's a little unusual," Bunting said of the tornado threat. "We don't see this every winter with this kind of warmth preceding a storm system."

Bunting said a lesser threat of severe storms and possible tornadoes extends over a huge area as far north as Chicago and extending east to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nashville, Tennessee, and south into Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

"This weather system will reach its peak intensity this afternoon into the evening. It will only get stronger and cover a larger area over the next 12 to 18 hours," he said.

In Arkansas, forecasters predicted winds of up to 80 miles per hour (129 km per hour) and possible tornadoes throughout the state on Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service made a special release of weather balloons in Arkansas on Tuesday because of the threat.

A strong line of storms, including possible tornadoes, had left more than 11,000 customers without power in Arkansas by Tuesday night.

Strong winds downed trees and lightning strikes may have started fires in Monticello, a town of 9,500 in southeast Arkansas, according to a police dispatcher.

The National Weather Service reported two possible tornadoes in Missouri and Arkansas, though neither had apparently caused any significant damage.

The tornado threat was the latest development in a turbulent weather pattern.

Several cities set records for warmth on Monday and a few more record high temperatures were expected on Tuesday, although there were more clouds overhead to moderate temperature, Bunting said.

The high reached 74 Fahrenheit (23 Celsius) in Kansas City on Monday, encouraging residents to go outside for a winter round of golf or to a park wearing shorts and flip-flops.

By midmorning on Tuesday, the temperature had fallen to 43F in Kansas City and was expected to fall to 28F overnight with a chance of snow.

The temperature was 61F as far north as Chicago on Tuesday and the warmth extended into Indiana.

"The tornado and damaging wind threat will continue well after dark tonight," Bunting said, adding that people should be aware of the weather and monitor media reports.

Tornadoes are most dangerous after dark when residents are sometimes unable to see the approaching storm in time to take cover.

BlackBerry Z10 review

DNP Z10 review

One cannot overstate the importance of this phone. This, the BlackBerry Z10, is the device upon which the fate of BlackBerry (formerly Research in Motion) hangs. That's not to say that the company will disappear if the Z10 -- and the BlackBerry 10 OS that it contains -- is not a mass-market success. But if this phone does not do its job of extending the reach of the 'Berry OS beyond those die-hard loyalists who have clung on to their Bolds and Torches and Storms, it's safe to say that BlackBerry is in for some very hard times.

The company hasn't exactly bet the proverbial farm on this BB10 release, but with massive financial losses tempered only by job cuts, plus an absolutely tectonic shift among the executive leadership and corporate culture architected by CEO and President Thorsten Heins, the phrase "make or break" feels pretty apt. So, then, is this the phone that's good enough to woo buyers away from the Galaxy S III or the iPhone 5 or any of the other delicious devices on the other platforms? The short answer is that no, as of now it isn't quite -- but of course it's a lot more complicated than that. Join us as we explore.

ZTE's 5.7-inch, 8mm-thick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC launch, we go hands-on

ZTE's 57inch, 8mmthick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC, we go handson

Huawei may have its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate for the convenience of hiding your face, but ZTE's also prepping its very own tabletphone to go head to head with its main rival. Dubbed the Grand Memo (V9815), this 5.7-inch 720p device made a surprise appearance at a ZTE event in Hong Kong today, and we got to snap some photos of it. The device looks identical to the P945 leaked earlier this month but packs some slightly different specs: 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (same as the more premium Grand S), 13-megapixel camera, 8mm-thick body and Android 4.1.2.

While the specs aren't too shabby, our colleague Stone Ip said the choice of finish on the body didn't feel as nice as the Grand S', and the silver bezel made the Grand Memo look worse, but in ZTE's defense it was a prototype and the design may improve in the retail version. On a more positive note, the new phone does include a microSD slot despite its slimness, and it comes with a "one-hand" T9 keyboard that can stick to either side of the screen for better single-handed typing, just too bad we were asked not to take a video of the device at the time. That said, the Grand Memo will be officially unveiled at MWC next month, so stay tuned for more.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The indestructible Twinkie appears to be one step closer to a comeback.

Hostess Brands is close to announcing that it has picked two investment firms ? C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management ? as the lead bidders for its Twinkies and other snack cakes, according to a source close to the situation who was not authorized to comment publicly on the talks.

The joint "stalking horse" bid would set the floor for an auction process that lets competitors make better offers. A judge would have to approve any final sale.

After years of management turmoil and turnover, Hostess declared it was going out of business and selling its brands in November. The company, based in Irving, Texas, has already announced separate lead bidders for its other brands. McKee Foods, which makes Little Debbie snack cakes, was picked as the lead bidder for Drake's cakes, which include Devil Dogs, Funny Bones and Yodels.

Flowers Foods, which makes Tastykakes and a variety of breads, was picked as the lead bidder for six of Hostess' major bread brands, including Wonder.

United States Bakery Inc. was picked as the lead bidder for a number of smaller bread brands.

Citing sources close to the situation it did not name, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the offer for Twinkies and other snack cakes by C. Dean Metropoulos and Apollo would be for more than $400 million. The report said that the deal could be disclosed as early as Tuesday. C. Dean Metropoulos owns Pabst Brewing Co.

A representative for Apollo declined to comment. A representative for C. Dean Metropoulos did not return calls for comment.

Hostess has stressed in bankruptcy proceedings that it needs to move quickly in the sale of its brands to capitalize on the outpouring of nostalgia and media coverage prompted by its demise. The longer the cakes and breads are off shelves, the more people will become accustomed to eating cakes and breads by rivals, the company has said.

Apple Releases iOS 6.1, Improves Siri and iTunes Match

Apple Releases iOS 6.1, Improves Siri and iTunes MatchToday Apple released iOS 6.1, adding improvements to Siri and iTunes Match (among other things). Perhaps more exciting, however, is the greater likelihood that we'll finally see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.

While the update may let you buy movie tickets with your voice, make iTunes Match work a little better, and add LTE to several new international markets, iTunes 6.1 is the update jailbreaks have been waiting for. Generally a jailbreak isn't released until Apple releases their first major point update. Now that it's here, we'll hopefully see a jailbreak option surface sometime in February. In the meantime, however, you can enjoy some improved features and bug fixes courtesy of Apple. The update is available in iTunes or through your device directly in the Settings app (General -> Software Update).

Focus On Fracking Diverts Attention From Horizontal Drilling

Mention the recent surge in oil and natural gas production in the U.S. and one word comes to mind for a lot of people: "fracking." Hydraulic fracturing is a controversial technique that uses water, sand and potentially hazardous chemicals to break up rock deep underground to release oil and natural gas.

But there's another technology that is just as responsible for drilling booms happening across the country: horizontal drilling.

Environmental Consequences

Horizontal drilling and fracking have been combined in recent years to make previously unprofitable deposits profitable.

Much of the oil and natural gas that drillers are after these days is sandwiched deep underground in layers of rock.

"A vertical well going through a hundred-foot-thick gas shale, like the Marcellus, contacts that formation for a hundred feet," says Terry Engelder, professor of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University.

That means a driller would be able to extract oil or gas from only that 100-foot section. But with horizontal drilling, Engelder says, the drill bit makes a turn and extends the well out ? horizontally ? through that layer of petroleum-rich shale. Instead of extracting gas from only a 100-foot section, now a driller can extract it from a section that extends a mile or more.

Combining both technologies has turned once sleepy communities into industrial zones in states such as North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas. The environmental consequences spawned a new protest movement. It's showing up in your movie theater in the recent film Promised Land and the 2010 film Gasland.

This past summer Yoko Ono and her son, Sean Lennon, sang their fracking protest song "Don't Frack My Mother" on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Ono held a globe labeled "Mother Earth" as her son sang about the dangers of fracking, but they never mention horizontal drilling.

'Naughty Connotation'

While you won't hear about horizontal drilling in a song or see it on a bumper sticker, it's just as responsible as fracking for changing rural landscapes. So why all the focus on fracking?

Chris Tucker of Energy in Depth, a project of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, suspects the reason fracking has taken off ? especially among the industry's opponents ? is the word itself.

"It starts with F, ends in C-K," he says. "It sort of has this naughty connotation to it."

Tucker says fracking has been distilled down to a curse word, "and that's important for press releases and bumper stickers and everything else. Horizontal drilling hasn't been distilled that way."

This focus on fracking and not horizontal drilling has surprised even some of the petroleum industry's critics.

"In our organization we talked about fracking maybe eight years ago," says Bruce Baizel, with Earthworks' Oil and Gas Accountability Project. "I never would have predicted that it would have become the catchall term."

Fracking has evolved to mean more than just hydraulic fracturing. Baizel says people now use it to refer to just about anything to do with producing oil and gas.

"It means either drilling or ... hydraulic fracturing or it means the truck that ran off the road and spilled whatever the waste was it was hauling away from the well site," Baizel says.

Groups like Baizel's that regularly go up against huge oil companies have embraced this expanded definition of fracking. Oil and gas drilling employs complicated technology that can be difficult to explain to the general public. But with one common word ? especially one like fracking that just sounds bad ? it's easier to rally opposition.

Annenberg Foundation to build nature center at Ballona Wetlands

The Annenberg Foundation plans to build a $50-million interpretive center in the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve under an agreement to be signed Monday with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials aim to make the center a place for people to "come to learn how nature works and how each of them is a part of it," said Charlton H. "Chuck" Bonham, Fish and Wildlife director.

The announcement marked rare movement in the state's efforts to restore one of Southern California's few remaining wetlands and open it to the public. Activists, developers and government agencies have wrangled for decades over the fate of the 600 acres between Marina del Rey and Westchester.

One wetlands activist decried the Annenberg plan as a theft of public land slated for wildlife habitat.

"I'm shocked and disappointed that the Annenberg Foundation would even entertain the idea of destroying land acquired for wildlife habitat and using it for a building, a restaurant and a parking lot," said Marcia Hanscom, executive director of the Ballona Institute, a nonprofit corporation.

But Lisa Fimiani, executive director of Friends of Ballona Wetlands, said her group has embraced Annenberg's involvement and investment. She said that the acre proposed for the building site is in poor condition and that Annenberg plans to improve the adjoining ball fields as part of the project. "We welcome them," she said.

Officials said details of the Annenberg plan were still evolving but that key elements would include educational programs and exhibits about wetlands, human-wildlife interactions and the history of Native Americans in the area.

The 46,000-square-foot project would tentatively include an auditorium, classrooms, a public lobby, exhibits on wildlife and domestic animals, facilities for an animal adoption and care program, veterinary facilities for animals on site, retail space, parking and office space for staff. A snack bar is also a possibility.

The California State Coastal Conservancy and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission would be parties to the agreement.

This is not Annenberg's first effort to team with government on a habitat project.

In 2011, Annenberg withdrew plans to create a $50-million animal-focused educational complex on coastal city property in Rancho Palos Verdes. The proposal, submitted in 2008 after several years of preliminary discussions, was for a 51,000-square-foot facility that would have featured exhibit and classroom space and adoption suites for 10 dogs and eight cats. The idea met with opposition from Rancho Palos Verdes residents and concerns of state and federal officials.

A decade ago, the state paid $139 million in voter-approved bond money to buy what was left of the Ballona Wetlands, the last sizable coastal marsh in Los Angeles County, from Playa Capital, the developer of Playa Vista. The Ballona Wetlands deal, negotiated in part by the nonprofit Trust for Public Land, saved the area from development.

The state is in the early stages of an environmental review of the wetlands area, which stretches south and west from the proposed interpretive center. The site, once owned by industrialist Howard Hughes, is home to great blue herons, burrowing owls, the El Segundo blue butterfly, voles and lizards, although its ecosystem has become degraded by exotic plants and dumping.

Talks continue on how best to restore and preserve the wetlands. Activists have made various proposals and vow to fight any plans to bulldoze invader weeds there.

Bonham and Leonard Aube, Annenberg Foundation executive director, said they hoped construction of the interpretive center could begin in 2014, depending on the timing and outcome of a required review under the California Environmental Quality Act.

Aube said the foundation would also consider providing funds for trails, lighting, parking, signage and a full- or part-time state worker at the reserve.

(AP) ? "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" cooked up $19 million in its opening weekend.

Paramount's R-rated action film update on the classic fairytale topped the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Hansel & Gretel" features Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as grown-up renditions of the title characters battling witches with crossbows.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, blamed icy weather on the East Coast for the film's not-so-bewitching debut.

"We got dinged a little bit with the weather on Friday, but overall we're pleased," said Harris, who added that "Hansel & Gretel" performed solidly internationally, earning $25 million overseas.

Other films opening over the weekend in the U.S. and Canada didn't fare as well. The crime thriller "Parker," starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, debuted in fifth place with $7 million, while Relativity Media's raunchy ensemble comedy "Movie 43" opened in the seventh spot with $5 million.

Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted that it was the first time box-office grosses were down over last year after four up weekends.

Universal's supernatural horror film "Mama" starring Jessica Chastain dropped to second place with $12.8 million in its second weekend.

Several best-picture Academy Awards contenders continued to benefit from Oscar buzz, as well as the motion picture academy's decision to move up this year's nomination announcement, giving nominees more time in theaters between the Jan. 10 nominations unveiling and the Feb. 24 ceremony.

"Having an Oscar nomination is like holding a lottery ticket," said Dergarabedian. "It could pay off on Oscar night, but it's already paying big dividends now. All this time between the Oscar nominations and the telecast is prime time for these movies to capitalize on their higher profile."

"Silver Linings Playbook," which is up for eight Academy Awards, came in third place over the weekend with $10 million. The film starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence is in its 11th weekend of release and earned $3 million overseas.

"Zero Dark Thirty," the Osama bin Laden manhunt drama also starring Chastain, dropped to fourth place with $9.8 million. It's competing in five categories at the Academy Awards and nabbed $3.6 million internationally.

"Django Unchained," which is nominated for five Oscars, took in $5 million in sixth place, and the musical "Les Miserables," which is up for eight Academy Awards, earned $3.9 million in the 10th position. It was the fifth weekend for both films. "Django" topped the international chart with $47.9 million in 65 total territories.

How To Prepare Your Kitchen For The Market - Home Stager in Atlanta

As I?m sure you?ve heard, kitchens are one of the ?key-rooms? to a buyer. That said, it?s important that it look its very best when you put your home on the market.

Here are some tips to help get you started:

  • Do a thorough cleaning.
  • Clean and organize the inside of your cupboards, as well as your pantry. Potential buyers will definitely be opening them to see just how much space they?ll have for their own items.
  • For the exterior of the cupboards, clean by using a detergent and then followed by a water and vinegar mixture. Next, apply an orange oil as this will help them shine.

One of the most frequently asked questions from homeowners who will be living in the home while it?s on the market is what to have on their counter tops.

Having staged hundreds of vacant homes throughout Atlanta, my recommendations include:

  • Removing everything off the counters and add only those items you use daily.
  • Detergent bottles and sponges should be placed under the sink
  • Remove all paperwork. While the kitchen counter top is convenient for incoming mail (junk or otherwise), its best to keep your counter tops clutter-free.
  • Make it pretty by adding accessories.

Here are a few examples of some of the kitchens we?ve staged:

Cop jumps from car to tackle moving motorcyclist

By Neysa Greer, Lauren Steussy and R. Stickney, NBCSanDiego.com

An officer pursuing a potentially stolen motorcycle in Mission Valley, San Diego, was dragged down a street after attempting to stop the motorist, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The pursuit began late Thursday at about 10 p.m. near Mission Center Road and Hazard Center Drive, police said.

The officer was responding to a report of a stolen motorcycle when he saw the motorcycle and began following it.

The motorcyclist fled up the hill to Murray Ridge Road.

In an attempt to stop the motorcyclist, the officer jumped from his patrol car and grabbed the motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist continued to flee with the officer still holding on. The officer was dragged for an unknown distance until the motorcyclist lost control and crashed, police said.

Authorities took the motorcyclist into custody.

Read more from NBCSanDiego.com

The officer was not injured, however there were three incidents earlier this week in which officers were injured on the job.

On Monday, an officer was punched during a scuffle with a suspect outside a convenience store at Florida and El Cajon Boulevard in University Heights.

Then, later the same day, a woman was arrested for battery on a peace officer after she punched the officer at the downtown trolley station at American Plaza and India Street.

The next day, an officer was attacked by a man along the side of the road in Mission Bay. Authorities on the scene said a father trying to drive his 21-year-old son to a mental health facility crashed the car after the son became violent.

NRA lobbyist criticizes ad referring to Obama's kids

Fulfilling a promise made in Newtown one month ago, President Obama is set to reveal proposals to curb gun violence, which will reportedly include universal background checks, a crackdown on gun trafficking, and a renewed assault weapons ban. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

    By Susan Cornwell, Reuters

WASHINGTON - One of the National Rifle Association's senior lobbyists said an ad by the nation's leading gun-rights group after a school shooting in Connecticut that refers to President Barack Obama's children was "ill-advised."

Jim Baker, head of the federal affairs division at the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said he had made his views known to others at the powerful gun-rights organization.

The ad, which cast Obama as hypocritical for having expressed skepticism about putting armed guards in schools, when "his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools," drew widespread criticism when it first became public on Jan. 15.

Nationwide outrage over the shooting of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 moved gun violence and gun control to the center of the U.S. political debate.

"I don't think it was particularly helpful, that ad," Baker told Reuters in a telephone interview. "I thought it ill-advised."

"I think the ad could have made a good point, if it talked about the need for increased school security, without making the point using the president's children," he said. The NRA has advocated putting armed guards in schools.

Baker was the NRA's representative at a meeting with Vice President Joseph Biden on Jan. 10 to discuss the administration's plans to reduce gun violence in the wake of the school shooting.

He said he was not involved in creating the ad, and once it appeared, he had let others at the NRA know what he thought. "I got to say my piece," he said.

Baker gave no details of their response to him, but said, "Believe it or not, there are occasionally differences of opinion in this building."

In the ad, a narrator asks, "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" Obama's daughters, 14-year-old Malia and 11-year-old Sasha, attend private school in Washington and receive Secret Service protection, as is routine for children of presidents.

The White House has called the NRA ad "repugnant and cowardly," while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said it was "reprehensible" and undermined the NRA's credibility by bringing the president's children into the debate. Christie is considered a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016.

Susan Eisenhower, the daughter of the late President Dwight Eisenhower who had Secret Service protection as a child, wrote in the Washington Post that she was "disgusted" by the ad.

The NRA's president, David Keene, objected to the White House criticism earlier this month, saying "We didn't name the president's daughters ... What we said is that these are people who think that their families deserve protection that yours don't."

The president's critics also have noted that when Obama announced his plan to respond to the gun violence, he was flanked by four children. Obama proposed renewing a U.S. assault weapons ban, as well as banning high-capacity magazines and more stringent background checks for gun purchasers.?

David Keene, president of the National Rifle Association, responds to the Obama administration's proposed gun safety measures, saying law-abiding gun owners "have a good deal to fear" from the proposals and defending the NRA's controversial new ad.

Congress making budget promises it can't keep

    4 hrs.

Next time you hear someone in Washington come up with a long-term plan to balance the federal budget, take it with a Capitol Building-sized grain of salt.

As the tax and spending battle rages on in the nation?s capital, Democrats and Republicans are vowing to replace temporary, stop-gap budget measures with a long-term plan to narrow the gap between how much the government raises in taxes and how much Congress agrees to spend.

Though bitterly divided over how to pull it off, both sides agree that a gradual, long-term, budget-balancing plan would do less damage to the economy than the steep, short-term spending cuts set to take effect in a few weeks.?Earlier this week, House Republicans set a 10-year timetable for bringing revenues and spending into line.

"Balancing the budget over the next 10 years means that we save the future for our kids and our grandkids," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said when the deal was announced.

Even if every member of Congress agreed with that goal, it?s a promise none of them can keep.

Any long term budget is subject to a long list of unknowns ? from disasters and wars, to recessions and financial crises - that can quickly knock it off course.?The list includes a future Congress that decides to tear up the plan and replace it with a new one.

?You can talk about a budget as a establishing a sense of direction but you can?t talk about a long term budget as a precise point of arrival,? said William Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a policy advisor in the Clinton administration. ?All sorts of things can alter the assumptions that underlie any long-term planning.?

Congress hit the pause button in the ongoing budget battle this week) by delaying a looming deadline to prevent the government from borrowing to pay its bills. The deal lets the Treasury Department continue to sell bonds to make up the gap between the taxes it collects and the spending Congress has authorized.

That measure effectively postponed the debt ceiling crunch until mid-May. The exact date is difficult to predict because the Treasury is able to juggle its bills for a few weeks as it approaches the borrowing cap.

The next hard deadline comes with automatic budget cuts ? the spending side of the so-called ?fiscal cliff? ? that were delayed until March 1 and pared down by $24 billion in the last-minute, year-end deal that raised taxes on the wealthiest households.

Those cuts, the so-called ?sequester,? were enacted in July 2011 after the last debt-ceiling standoff.

The hope was that the impact of the cuts would be so dire that the deadline would force a compromise in the long-standing budget deadlock. Republicans and the White House remain on a collision course over a long-term plan to replace the sequester?s meat clever approach to spending cuts.

Both sides agreed to come up with a long-term budget plan ? or forego their paychecks. (That?s another promise easier made than kept. The 27th Amendment requires that any change in elected representatives? salaries apply only to the next session of Congress. So the move is largely for show.)

Replacing the short-term budget measures with a 10-year plan begins with a series of guesses about future spending that are all but impossible to make. Will the U.S. fight a war in the next decade? How many natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy will prompt emergency relief spending? Will the cost of health care continue rising faster than the rate of inflation?

There are even bigger wild guesses embedded in the economic projections used to estimate how much money the government will take in through taxes. Will there be a recession in the next 10 years? If so, will it be mild or severe? Short or long?

Like any long-term plan, a relatively small miss on that estimate can have a big impact down the road. If the current $16 trillion U.S. economy grows at the 50-year historical average pace of about 3 percent, for example, in 10 years gross domestic product ? a rough measure of the nation?s income - will hit $21.5 trillion. If that growth rate continues at the current, roughly 2 percent pace, GDP will hit only $19.5 trillion ? generating less tax revenue from businesses and households even if tax rates remain steady.

?You can solve a lot of problems if you simply build in the kind of economic performance that we saw in the last six years of Reagan or the last five of Bill Clinton,? said Galston. ?It?s possible to do anything on paper if you don?t care what you?re doing.?

Iowa Democrat Harkin won't seek sixth Senate term

DES MOINES (Reuters) - Senator Tom Harkin, a veteran Iowa Democrat and one of the most liberal senators, said on Saturday he will not seek re-election in 2014, putting at risk what was considered a safe Democratic seat.

Harkin, 73, who has focused much of his nearly 40-year congressional career on farm policy, education and expanding rights for people with disabilities, is the third senator facing re-election next year who has announced his retirement, following Democrat Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Republican Saxby Chambliss of Georgia.

"It's somebody else's turn. It's time for me to step aside ... . I think that's not only good for our party, it's good for our state and for our nation," Harkin said in an interview with Reuters.

He said he had no health problems but had promised his wife that he would quit before it was too late to enjoy other things in life.

Iowa, site of the country's first presidential nominating contest, is considered a political swing state. Republican Charles Grassley is Iowa's other U.S. senator.

In remarks to the Iowa Democratic Party central committee after his announcement, Harkin said he would stay politically active.

"I'm not quitting today. This is not a time for legacy talks or anything like this," said Harkin, who has served in Congress since 1974.

Several committee members had tears running down their cheeks as he spoke.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, in a statement described Harkin as "a passionate progressive, whose deeply held principles have provided a guiding light to Democrats for decades."

    SEARCH IS ON

Party officials said Harkin's announcement, coming early in the current two-year election cycle, provides ample time to recruit a strong Democratic candidate.

Among Democrats, U.S. Representative Bruce Braley is widely seen as a front-runner. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, and his wife, Christine Vilsack, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress last year, are also viewed as potential candidates.

Among Republicans, U.S. Representatives Tom Latham, a moderate, and Steve King, a conservative, are mentioned as possible candidates, which could produce a divisive Republican primary.

Democratic President Barack Obama won Iowa in the November election. But the state has a Republican governor, and a divided legislature and congressional delegation.

Harkin's retirement "just reinforces our belief that a grassroots Republican comeback can take place in 2014. Let's have it start in Iowa," Iowa Republican Party Chairman A.J. Spiker said in an email appeal to state Republicans.

The party needs to pick up six seats in the mid-term elections next year to take a majority in the 100-member Senate.

One of the last of the Senate's old-guard liberals, Harkin angrily opposed the White House over the recent fiscal cliff compromise that Vice President Joe Biden negotiated with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Harkin said the deal that raised taxes only on the very rich helps the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1974 and to the Senate in 1984, Harkin said someone younger needs to take his place.

    "I've been there 40 years. I'm 73. By the time I run (for re-election), I'd be 75," he said.

Tight squeeze forces cells to take their medicine

    Douglas Heaven, reporter

    Cell-in-squeeze2.jpg

(Image: Emily Jackson and Armon Sharei/Jensen and Langer Group)

A short sharp squash in these channels and a cell's normally impregnable membrane pops open - good news when you want to slip a molecule or nanoparticle of your choice in there.

Getting stuff into cells is difficult, fortunately - the outer membrane protects a cell from natural intruders. Annoyingly, it is also a barrier for drug molecules, or for nanoparticles used in some imaging techniques. One way around this is to use viruses or proteins - both of which have developed their own clever ways of entering a cell - to deliver the desired payload. But this can be inefficient and has drawbacks, especially when deliberately introducing a virus into a cell.

Armon Sharei at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues may have the answer. They have built a tiny production line in which a cell's membrane is temporarily opened up by squeezing it through a narrow channel at high speed.

The image shows a small part of the process. You can see four of 70 channels that can operate in parallel. The channels sit in a solution containing cells and whatever particle needs to be put inside them. About 50,000 cells are then forced through the channels each second.

As a cell squeezes through the channel, holes open up in its membrane and stay open for 30 to 60 seconds - long enough for the other particles in the solution to enter by diffusion.

Speed is important. "You've got to hit them hard enough," says Sharei. The challenge was in finding the right balance. "Too hard and it'll kill the cells, too soft and it doesn't work."

The slow-motion video above shows a cell passing through a channel in an early prototype of the device. In the latest version, the cells move so quickly that even high-speed cameras can't keep up. "You'd need to be able to capture about 200,000 frames a second," says Sharei.

This has posed a practical problem for the researchers: unable to see what happens, they must now use indirect methods such as computer simulations to observe how the cell membranes open.

In addition to its efficiency, the main advantage of this approach is that a carrier such as a virus is not needed, so there should be fewer side effects. "It's just the cell and what you want to put in it," says Sharei.

The technique should be particularly useful with immune cells, which are notoriously difficult to implant with drugs. For example, by running a cancer patient's blood through the device, you could implant a molecule that instructs their immune cells to target a specific part of a tumour, says Sharei.

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Forget the firm handshake and networking chit chat. Business students who want a job at Caesars Entertainment need to work on their poker faces.

Nearly 300 Master of Business Administration students and alumni anted up for a three-day Texas Hold 'em poker contest last weekend in hopes of hauling in a corner office. Hiring managers and corporate executives schmoozed with candidates during breaks in the action.

The annual MBA tournament on the Las Vegas Strip was little more than a marketing gimmick until last year, when Caesars decided to add cocktail hours and high-level interviews, said Tijuana Plant, who works in the company's human resources department.

Now, the event is a serious recruitment tool. The festive atmosphere and real-money stakes help the company screen for the critical thinking ability and social aptitude needed in the gambling industry, where business is often mixed with pleasure, Plant said.

"We like to see analytical people," she said. "Poker players are analytical and are willing to take strategic risk, and that is what we're looking for."

Caesars held a networking reception Friday and a two-hour presentation about its corporate culture Saturday. On Sunday, 20 lucky MBAs were invited to formally interview with casino bigwigs for a spot in the company's 10-week management trainee program, which pays $16,000.

Apprentices perform a variety of high-level jobs, including masterminding marketing strategies and working with general managers to troubleshoot on properties, Plant said. Last year, four of the 12 people accepted into the trainee program played in the tournament.

Students flew in from prestigious programs including Harvard Business School, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the MIT Sloan School of Management. But executives were on the alert for nerds.

"We're not selling insurance. This is a fun industry, and we're selling a lifestyle," Plant said. "We're watching for whether they're not having a good time at all and just focusing on the job, or if they're having fun and looking for a job at the same time. It's kind of our test."

Caesars Entertainment Corp. operates more than 40 casinos around the world, including the Flamingo in Las Vegas, the Emerald Casino Resort in South Africa and Harrah's casinos around the country.

Ashish Gupta was among the students who interviewed Sunday. He said he lasted a few hours in Friday's tournament but spent most of the weekend making friends and learning about the casino industry.

"I just made my bid and had a good time," said Gupta, who is in his second year at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. "I was not really stressed out about losing my buy-in. It was cool just meeting people in an environment where you wouldn't normally have that interaction."

Some aspiring business moguls who did not land interviews still walked away from the tournament at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino with cash prizes approaching $8,000. Candidates had to ante from $85 to $225 to enter the eighth annual tournament, depending on how much they hoped to win.

Caesars appears to be the only casino to pit potential hires against each other around a card table. But more companies are turning to this kind of "event recruiting" to compete for top candidates, though job seekers are not usually required to pay to play, said Emily Taylor, who teaches career management at UCLA's Anderson School of Management.

"I think it's a great strategy by Caesars," she said. "The economy is improving and we're starting to see firms trying to distinguish themselves in different ways."

Creative gambits also allow recruiters to establish a cultural match more quickly, said Lisa Feldman, executive director of MBA career management at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Last fall, a division of Amazon.com Inc. sponsored a Friday-night party for Hass students, she said. Neutrogena Corp. invites students to write essays about skin care to win admission to a cocktail party. And one real estate investment management firm in Newport Beach, Calif., flies standout students to a golf tournament.

These events are designed to tell a story about the company, Feldman said, and the Caesars tournament told one, too.

"The gesture of having a buy-in kind of says, 'We're about real money," she said.

John Unwin, CEO of the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, which competes with Caesars, said his hiring managers also like to observe candidates interacting with one other, but they create those situations without a mound of chips.

He said poker fit more directly in Caesars' wheelhouse.

"They love poker. They own the World Series of Poker," he said.

The game also seems to have taken hold in MBA programs, with schools such as Wharton and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business setting up their own regular card games.

Plant said poker may one day eclipse golf as the preferred pastime of the business elite.

"It's becoming more of a way for people to interact with each other and discuss business in a casual setting," she said.

The MBA tournament candidates who end up landing casino jobs may not play again for a while, though. Caesars executives are banned from playing cards on company property.

Too discriminatory? Bill backs father-daughter dances

    Lori Stratford / cranston.patch.com

Father-daughter dances like this one would be allowed -- once again -- if a proposed state law passes.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

The age-old tradition of father-daughter dances may get an encore performance on school dance floors in Cranston, R.I.

A lawmaker is sponsoring a bill that she hopes will amend Rhode Island's language on gender discrimination laws just enough to allow gender-specific events, such as father-daughter dances or mother-son baseball games, to make a comeback after they were banned last fall.

?I don?t believe the intent of these events was ever to be overtly discriminatory, but we all have to live with the language of the law. This bill, if approved and enacted, should ensure that these events can continue without weakening our resolve to oppose discriminatory activities,? State Sen. Hanna Gallo, who represents Cranston, said in a statement.

The legislation would amend state law to permit schools "to provide activities for students of one sex provided that reasonably comparable activities are provided for students of the other sex," Gallo said a in a statement.

Cranston banned father-daughter dances last year,?saying they were a violation of state gender laws after the American Civil Liberties Union?sent a complaint on behalf of a single mom, who said her daughter couldn't attend because she didn't have a dad to accompany her.

?A dance for girls and a baseball game for boys, particularly in light of the stereotypes they embody, are not, we submit, ?reasonably comparable? activities. To the contrary; the stereotypes at their core undermine the goal of school anti-discrimination laws,? the ACLU?letter read.?

At least one Cranston elementary school has managed to avoid the controversy altogether: Hold family dances instead.

"The stereotypical family doesn't really exist anymore," Robyn Ladouceur, a parent of a sixth-grader at Garden City School in Cranston. "We know for a fact that we have families from lesbian couples that have children, and adopted children, and all different faiths and religions. Why don't we just have an event for whoever you'd like to bring?"

Ladouceur is the parent facilitator of the Family Engagement Network, a PTO-type organization.?She hopes her school will be a role model for others in Cranston, regardless of the outcome of Gallo's legislation.

"I'm trying to grasp what they're losing in calling a father-daughter dance 'a family dance,' what they're losing in calling a mother-son bowling 'family bowling,'" she said. "Anybody who has listened to both sides would say if the kids aren't losing out on anything and all we're doing is making it more acceptable for all people to come, and you just want your husband to take your daughter to the family dance, no one is going to look differently upon you."

The town of Cranston, located a few miles outside of Providence, is no stranger to controversy. In April 2011, a 15-year-old girl teamed up with the ACLU and filed a lawsuit over a prayer banner that hung in her high school's auditorium. Jessica Ahlquist, an atheist, received death threats for insisting that the banner, which had been up for decades, be removed; ultimately, she won the lawsuit.?

    Pierced for Beauty

The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with Body Jewelry.

Traditionally, jewelry was worn in the ancient times to express the bearer?s power and social standing. It traditionally was a symbol of exclusivity and no common person could wear them. For instance, in ancient Egypt, only religious figures and political leaders were allowed to wear jewelry. During this time, jewelry were more than special symbols of wealth and power. They were used also as talismans and important pieces for rituals.

Perhaps as a way of rebelling against this age-old tradition of the symbol of jewelry, certain alternative groups in society have decided to make a statement in the way they wear jewelry by allowing themselves to undergo non traditional body piercings to be able to adorn body jewelry.

In the not so distant past, these individuals with many alternative body piercings were called punk. These individuals were often societal outcasts and would traditionally be in tattered, non-traditional outfits there were usually in the color black or in other austere and subdued colors. These individuals had body piercings and jewelry in areas of the body that were once considered to be absurd. It all perhaps began with multiple ear piercing to be able to accommodate multiple earrings in one ear.

But then, we started to see nose rings, tongue and even eyebrow rings as these individuals pushed expectations further. Those particular body piercing and jewelry are only the ones found on the face. However, body piercing encompasses the whole body and body jewelry has been known to adorn other body parts like the nipples via nipple rings and other piercing in sensitive areas of the human body.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

While these types of body piercing and jewelry were once considered taboo, present society has been more forthcoming of these types of adornment. While it is still considered daring and different to sport body piercing and matching jewelry, it cannot be denied that it has gained more acceptance and popularity as more and more singers, rappers and artists display their alternative body piercing and jewelry. Because of this phenomenon, body piercing and jewelry have become part of pop culture and enjoys better acceptance in society.

Because of the popularity of body piercing and jewelry for these, much more variety in jewelry designs are available in the market. Other than the old ?punk? look, body piercing jewelry now comes in different shapes, sizes and designs that allows the most popular pop icon to adorn a fashionable belly ring on her flat belly and look very attractive because of this.

While it may still be impossible for traditional jewelry stores to carry jewelry for body piercing, it is quite easy to find the body piercing jewelry that will fit your sense of style and preferences. If the process of body piercing scares you, just remember that if you do it in a hygienic way with qualified individuals then there shouldn?t be a problem with infections or those sorts of concerns.

It is also important to maintain proper hygiene after a piercing to make sure that the piercing heals properly. You can also opt to take vitamin C regularly while the wound is healing so that it mends faster and properly.

If it happens to be the pain factor that?s stopping you from getting a body piercing, just remember that some body parts are more susceptible to pain than the rest. For instance, more fatty areas of the body are less painful when pierced as opposed to more bony or cartilage based areas.
