Mitt Romney continued his long slog toward the Republican nomination Saturday, heading toward a victory in heavily Mormon Nevada ahead of Tuesday contests in Colorado and Minnesota.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, looked poised to handily win the caucuses, despite playing in the home state of Newt Gingrich's chief financial backer, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. The comparatively poor showing by Gingrich, the former House speaker, makes the seemingly inevitable Romney campaign appear that much more inevitable. For a campaign predicated on electability, such an appearance is essential.

Rick Santorum spoke with voters in Colorado Saturday night, saying the Republican presidential primary is "down to crunch time."

"We will win this election if we have someone who goes out and paints bold contrast," Santorum said, noting that the GOP candidate needed to "get Washington under control."

Santorum again insisted he was the candidate to beat Obama, claiming that "name recognition" is what he needs to beat Obama. He took shots at both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, claiming their popularity was due to aggressive and hostile campaigning.

"I didn't engage in petty, personal politics," Santorum said.

Rick Santorum is headed for a crushing loss in the Nevada caucuses Saturday, despite picking up the endorsement of Tea Party darling Sharron Angle, who in 2010 barely lost a high-profile and expensive senate bid to Majority Leader Harry Reid. Early exit polls show Santorum coming in a distant fourth, placing in the single digits.
