Arizona authorities search for missing woman

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) ? Authorities in suburban Phoenix are conducting a large-scale search for a 19-year-old woman who has been missing for two weeks.

Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley says more than 100 officers from the police department, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the FBI began the operation early Saturday near 5th and Hardy Streets. They're looking for Adrienne Salinas.

Salinas was last seen around 5 a.m. on June 15. Her vehicle was later found by her father, and it had two flat tires.

Family and friends have been passing out fliers in the hope that someone has information. A reward of $8,000 is being offered.

Pooley says Saturday's search also included Tempe Town Lake.

He says authorities have learned from past disappearance investigations that large-canvass searches are often helpful in providing new and pertinent information.

NASA turns off it?s Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Spacecraft

?

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA ? NASA has decommissioned its Galaxy Evolution Explorer after a decade of operations in which the venerable space telescope used its ultraviolet vision to study hundreds of millions of galaxies across 10 billion years of cosmic time.

?GALEX is a remarkable accomplishment,? said Jeff Hayes, NASA?s GALEX program executive in Washington. ?This small Explorer mission has mapped and studied galaxies in the ultraviolet, light we cannot see with our own eyes, across most of the sky.?

Operators at Orbital Sciences Corporation in Dulles, VA, sent the signal to decommission GALEX at 12:09pm PDT (3:09pm EDT) Friday, June 28th.

The spacecraft will remain in orbit for at least 65 years, then fall to Earth and burn up upon re-entering the atmosphere. GALEX met its prime objectives and the mission was extended three times before being cancelled.

Highlights from the mission?s decade of sky scans include:

  • Discovering a gargantuan, comet-like tail behind a speeding star called Mira.
  • Catching a black hole ?red-handed? as it munched on a star.
  • Finding giant rings of new stars around old, dead galaxies.
  • Independently confirming the nature of dark energy.
  • Discovering a missing link in galaxy evolution ? the teenage galaxies transitioning from young to old.

The mission also captured a dazzling collection of snapshots, showing everything from ghostly nebulas to a spiral galaxy with huge, spidery arms.

This image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer shows NGC 4565, one of the nearest and brightest galaxies not included in the famous list by 18th-century comet hunter Charles Messier. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)In a first-of-a-kind move for NASA, the agency in May 2012 loaned GALEX to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, which used private funds to continue operating the satellite while NASA retained ownership. Since then, investigators from around the world have used GALEX to study everything from stars in our own Milky Way galaxy to hundreds of thousands of galaxies 5 billion light-years away.

In the space telescope?s last year, it scanned across large patches of sky, including the bustling, bright center of our Milky Way. The telescope spent time staring at certain areas of the sky, finding exploded stars, called supernovae, and monitoring how objects, such as the centers of active galaxies, change over time.

GALEX also scanned the sky for massive, feeding black holes and shock waves from early supernova explosions.

This image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer shows NGC 6744, one of the galaxies most similar to our Milky Way in the local universe. This ultraviolet view highlights the vast extent of the fluffy spiral arms, and demonstrates that star formation can occur in the outer regions of galaxies. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)?In the last few years, GALEX studied objects we never thought we?d be able to observe, from the Magellanic Clouds to bright nebulae and supernova remnants in the galactic plane,? said David Schiminovich of Columbia University, New York, NY, a longtime GALEX team member who led science operations over the past year. ?Some of its most beautiful and scientifically compelling images are part of this last observation cycle.?

Data from the last year of the mission will be made public in the coming year.

?GALEX, the mission, may be over, but its science discoveries will keep on going,? said Kerry Erickson, the mission?s project manager at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA.

A slideshow showing some of the popular GALEX images is online at: http://go.nasa.gov/17xAVDd

JPL managed the GALEX mission and built the science instrument. The mission?s principal investigator, Chris Martin, is at Caltech. NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, developed the mission under the Explorers Program it manages.

Researchers sponsored by Yonsei University in South Korea and the Centre National d?Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France collaborated on the mission. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Family: American killed in Egypt was a teacher

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The family of an American college student killed in Egypt during violent protests says their son cared passionately about the Middle East and was in the country to teach English to children and to improve his own Arabic.

Andrew Pochter, of Chevy Chase, Md., was killed Friday in Alexandria during clashes between government supporters and opponents. His family said in a statement Saturday that he was stabbed by a protester while observing the demonstrations.

"He went to Egypt because he cared profoundly about the Middle East. He had studied in the region, loved the culture, and planned to live and work there in the pursuit of peace and understanding," the statement said.

The country has been roiled by ongoing demonstrations between protesters trying to oust President Mohammed Morsi and Islamists seeking to keep him in power. The U.S. State Department has warned Americans against all but essential travel, and households have been stocking up on goods in case the protests drag on.

The 21-year-old spent his spring semester studying in Amman, Jordan, as part of the AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program and was teaching in Egypt before returning in the fall to Kenyon College in Ohio. He majored in religious studies, was active in Hillel House ? the campus center for Jewish life ? and was a member of the rugby club and an organizer for the Middle Eastern Students Association, the college said.

Meryn Chimes, a New York University student who said she was a friend of Pochter, recalled how he traveled to Morocco between high school and college and sent her excited letters about how much he loved it there.

"When he came back, he just had this passion for the Middle East," she said.

During his travels, she said, he would marvel at everything from the food to the people he encountered at marketplaces to the Colonial architecture of Alexandria. She said he told her how much he loved teaching Egyptian children and how they worked so hard to master English.

"He said he hoped they liked him as a teacher, which I'm sure they did," she said.

She said they last spoke a few days ago.

"He really wanted to broaden people's perspective, especially in America. He wanted people to see places the way he saw them," said Chimes, noting how Pochter had spoken of potentially becoming a reporter.

"He saw the world in a way that I don't think anyone else did, and it was a really beautiful way," she added.

Lucas Pastorfield-Li, a friend from college, said he bonded with Pochter over a shared interest in education and international affairs. He said Pochter was soft-spoken and humble but also a talented musician who would weave international topics ? he did a college research project on the Muslim Brotherhood ? into freestyle raps.

"He had a way of just being way too wise beyond his years. I feel like most of the people in my generation are constantly trying to be heard," said Pastorfield-Li, 20, adding, "He had an amazing way of just conveying wisdom in such a humble and kind of subtle way."

He said Pochter would have been the "perfect poster boy" for any ad campaign for the college.

"It's not just me right now that this is really affecting," he said. "He was such an important person to so many people at the school, and Kenyon's such a small school, someone like Andrew is going to be a celebrity."

In the small town of Ithaca near Richland Center, nearly everyone from the community is together this weekend, supporting a little boy who's dealing with a very grown up issue.

"This whole weekend kind of revolves around a youth baseball tournament in which Jaxon is part of," said Shelly Maxwell.

In April, Jaxon Louis was diagnosed with brain cancer. Doctors were unable to remove the entire tumor, so he's now undergoing radiation and chemotherapy in Chicago.

"We're doing as much as we can to raise money for his treatments and travel expenses and doing as much as we can for his special family," Maxwell said. She organized the sports-themed fundraiser for the 7-year-old, who's a major sports fan.

Between an event with Culver's earlier in the week, and a fish fry and bake sale Friday, the event has raised more than $1,200 and counting. On Saturday, people can participate in a silent and live auction--all of the money will go to Jaxon's parents.

"I'm good friends with his mom and dad," Maxwell said. "I grew up with both of them. You know, any mother, even if it's one of your best friends that's suffering through this, any mother I think it hits them hard as well to know that their child is suffering and I think anybody would step forward."

"We can never repay what the community has done for us," Rhonda Louis said, Jaxon's mom.

She says her son has been brave througout the entire process, despite the emotional toll it's taken on her and her husband, Brad.

"He'll say, yep I have brain cancer. But it's not a big deal to him. He handles it better than us," she said. "Every aspect of our life has changed. It's been hard."

"Her and Jaxon are now in Chicago while he gets treatments, radiation and chemo five days a week," Brad said. "And I've been staying back with our two other daughters."

Jaxon still has six more rounds of chemotherapy to go, but this weekend, the only thing he's thinking about is what game to play next.

"He's shy. But when it comes to anything sports, when he's just playing with his friends, he's outgoing," Rhonda said.

"If it's got a ball he loves it," Brad said.

The fundraiser continues Sunday with the youth baseball tournament and a pancake breakfast at the Ithaca Community Gym.

More Species at Risk from Climate Change Than Thought

Climate change predictions paint a bleak picture for much of the world's flora and fauna: Species that can't keep up with a warming world will be pushed toward extinction unless conservation efforts can save them, the thinking goes. But a new study warns that many of the creatures most vulnerable to climate change are not currently considered conservation priorities.

A group of researchers with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) assessed all of the world's birds, amphibians and warm-water reef-building corals ? 16,857 species in total ? and analyzed their exposure to climate change, as well as a long list of biological and ecological characteristics that would affect each species' sensitivity and adaptability to changes in their natural habitat. These wildlife groups were chosen because they are relatively well-studied and they cover terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments.

Up to 83 percent of birds, 66 percent of amphibians and 70 percent of corals that they identified as highly vulnerable to climate change are not on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the study found. The Red List is the most widely recognized inventory of the planet's most endangered species. Species on the list are considered the most threatened with extinction and have generally experienced a sharp decline in population or a shrinking geographic range.

The researchers also made maps showing clusters of the most vulnerable animals that are not on the Red List. The most highly threatened but unlisted birds are concentrated in the Amazon basin and eastern South America, Europe, the Congo basin, parts of North America, northern and central Asia and Australia. The most vulnerable amphibians are bunched in the Amazon basin, Eurasia, southern North America to Mesoamerica and Madagascar, while at-risk but unlisted corals are concentrated in the Caribbean and southern Red Sea, the researchers wrote.

"The findings revealed some alarming surprises," study leader Wendy Foden, of the IUCN Global Species Programme, said in a statement. "We hadn't expected that so many species and areas that were not previously considered to be of concern would emerge as highly vulnerable to climate change. Clearly, if we simply carry on with conservation as usual, without taking climate change into account, we'll fail to help many of the species and areas that need it most."

Previous research has shown that birds, amphibians and corals are all facing existential threats due to climate change and other environmental factors. A study in the journal PLoS One last year found that bird extinctions are on the rise mainly because of habitat destruction for agriculture development. Amphibians have seen a precipitous decline in the past several decades. Their permeable skin and water-and-land life cycle make them especially vulnerable to changes in the environment, and the deadly spread of the chytrid fungus has sent frog populations plummeting worldwide. As for corals, warming oceans could mean more frequent bleaching for the reef-builders and eventually lead to mass die-offs.

The IUCN study was detailed this month in the journal PLOS One.

Colorado theater gunman to be tethered to courtroom floor for trial

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ruled on Thursday that accused theater gunman James Holmes will tethered to the courtroom floor by a cable for security reasons during his murder trial, but denied a defense request to sequester the jury.

Holmes is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder stemming from a shooting rampage last July that killed 12 moviegoers during a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" at a suburban Denver cinema.

Fifty-eight other people in the audience were wounded by gunfire and a dozen others suffered other injuries in the ensuing pandemonium.

Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty against Holmes, 25, if he is convicted.

The California native and former University of Colorado graduate student of neuroscience has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Holmes' public defenders have argued that allowing jurors to see their client handcuffed and shackled, as he has been in all of his court appearances so far, would unfairly prejudice them against the accused gunman.

Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour Jr. agreed, but said Holmes poses a security risk and that public safety requires that he be restrained during the proceedings.

Holmes will wear a harness under his street clothes with a cable bolting him to the courtroom floor, the judge said.

The cable will be visible to jurors, Samour said, but should be indistinguishable from computer cords emanating from the defense table.

In a separate ruling, the judge denied a defense motion requesting that jurors be sequestered during the trial, which is scheduled to start in February 2014 and is expected to last for about four months.

Jury sequestration is "an extremely rare procedure," the judge said, noting that it would be expensive and impractical to keep jurors sealed off from the outside world for the duration of the trial.

Defense lawyers can renew the request later if issues arise that warrant another look, Samour said.

Study details cancer-promoting mechanisms of overlooked components in secondhand smoke

June 25, 2013 ? Tobacco smoke, diesel exhaust and oil combustion carry polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons -- PAHs that are known to cause cancer. But of these PAHs, the obviously dangerous high-molecular-weight PAHs like benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) have received the vast majority of research attention. Their low-molecular-weight cousins have been largely overlooked, in part because studies have shown that these compounds alone aren't very successful at mutating genes in cancer-causing ways.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the journal PLoS One explores two of these low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs -- 1-methylanthracene (1-MeA) and 2-methylanthracene (2-MeA) -- and shows that while they don't necessarily cause cancer, 1-MeA promotes conditions that will likely allow cancer to grow.

"There's a big distinction between initiating cancer and promoting it," says Alison Bauer, PhD, CU Cancer Center investigator and assistant professor at the Colorado School of Public Health. Her study showed that in a mouse cell model using a progenitor cell of lung cancer, the LMW 1-MeA promoted inflammation and increased mitogenic pathways, both of which are linked to tumor promotion. 2-MeA, while nearly structurally identical, did not.

"These LMW PAHs have been considered less of a concern," Bauer says, "but we're finding evidence that's not the case. They're not likely initiating the cancer, but it looks as if they could promote it."

Among other effects, Bauer and colleagues found that 1-MeA disrupts communication between cells, affecting the "gap junctions" across which adjoining cells pass information. 1-MeA also upregulates the gene COX2, which has been shown in other studies to create an over-aggressive inflammatory response -- and this inflammation in turn can promote tumor growth.

"There are many different PAHs in secondhand smoke," Bauer says. "Some are obviously dangerous like BaP, which directly mutates genes. Others, like 1-MeA, we known very little about. Think about all these PAHs like chess pieces -- first you have to know how each piece moves and then you can start looking at how they all work together."

Bauer points to these PAH mixtures as the next step in research. Eventually, knowing the effects of these mixtures could help evaluate the risks of different combustion products. The work could also lead to new therapy targets if, perhaps, some of the changes promoted by these LMW PAHs prove preventable or reversible by medicines.

"With smoking rates decreasing, we think this problem is going away, but high levels of secondhand smoke still exist in the U.S., for example in some apartment buildings," Bauer says. "And around the world, in China, Russia, Poland and many other countries, secondhand smoke is still a major issue. Knowing the effects of these LMW PAHs like 1-MeA could help us prevent or treat cancers associated with them."

Laser guided codes advance single pixel terahertz imaging

June 25, 2013 ? The universe is awash in terahertz (THz) waves, as harmless as they are abundant. But unlike other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, THz has proven to be extremely difficult to manipulate in order to capture novel images of objects and materials with which these light waves interact.

Most existing THz imaging devices employ prohibitively expensive technology or require several hours and cumbersome manual controls in order to generate a viable image, according to Boston College Professor of Physics Willie J. Padilla.

Padilla and researchers in his lab recently reported a breakthrough in efforts to create accessible and effective THz imaging. Using both optical and electronic controls, the team developed a single-pixel imaging technique that uses a coded aperture to quickly and efficiently manipulate stubborn THz waves, according to a recent report in the journal Optics Express.

In the so-called terahertz gap, a region of wavelengths that falls between microwave and infrared frequencies, conventional electronic sensors and semiconductor devices are ineffective. Some systems capture only a fraction of a scene and the means to tune these THz waves are inefficient. This has fueled the search for new imaging technologies in order to manipulate THz waves.

Efforts to overcome the challenges of mechanics, cost and image clarity are viewed as a crucial step in efforts to tame the THz gap since imaging and sensing at this frequency holds the potential for advances in areas as divergent as chemical fingerprinting, security imaging of hidden weapons, even real-time skin imaging to promote simple detection of skin cancer.

Central to this challenge is the development of a technology to create efficient masks -- similar to the aperture of a camera -- capable of tuning THz radiation in order to produce clear images in just a few seconds.

Padilla and graduate students David Shrekenhamer and Claire M. Watts report their new single pixel imaging method centers on what they describe as a "coded aperture multiplex technique" where a laser beam and electronic signals are used to send a set of instructions to a semiconductor so it can guide the reproduction of the image of an object after THz waves have passed through it.

A digital micro-mirror device encodes the laser beam with instructions that direct certain segments of the silicon mask to react and allow a selected sample of the THz waves to pass freely through, consistent with the image pattern. The combination of optical instructions and the reaction of the semiconductor create a THz spatial light modulator, the team reports. Functioning like the aperture of a conventional camera, the modulator then guides the digital reconstruction of the entire image based on a broad sampling of THz waves that have passed through the object.

The team's experiments found the method could produce masks of varying resolutions, ranging from 63 to 1023 pixels and acquire images at speeds up to .5 Hz, or about 2 seconds. The early findings "demonstrate the viability of obtaining real-time and high-fidelity THz images using an optically controlled SLM with a single pixel detector," the team concluded.

Padilla said the findings have spurred additional research by his lab into ways to further control THz waves, such as by using the intricate patterns of an engineered metamaterial to further manipulate terahertz waves to create images faster and with increased efficiency.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) ? Demanding better public services and angered by World Cup costs, about 100,000 people are expected at a protest Wednesday before Brazil plays Uruguay in the Confederations Cup semifinals.

Officials have declared a holiday in Belo Horizonte and authorities are expecting confrontations with the demonstrators.

Belo Horizonte has had some of the most violent clashes between police and protesters since the country was swept by a wave of demonstrations calling for better education, transportation and health services.

There were no major protests in the city Tuesday. But groups closed three main roads, insisting that public officials pay more attention to their demands.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter will be in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday.

How would you change ASUS' Zenbook Prime UX31a?

DNP ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A an Ultrabook with a topnotch display

To paraphrase the words of our reviewer, ASUS' Zenbook Prime UX31A is the third-best thin and light laptop you can buy. That's high praise indeed when the only two superior devices are the MacBook Air and Samsung's Series 9. So, why does it deserve such love? That's probably down to its sleek design, six-hour battery life and smooth performance. The only things it has in the "demerit" column is a wonky trackpad and weak audio, but we can forgive that, can't we? No, this is How Would You Change, which means we want to know exactly that: what, if you've owned one of these units, would you change about it?

?Our Sisters in Headscarves?

On Sunday, June 16, with Istanbul?s Taksim Square in a fog of tear gas five miles away, thousands of supporters of Recep Tayyip Erdo?an gathered on seaside fair grounds to hear their embattled prime minister speak. For nearly three weeks protesters had filled Taksim and the adjacent Gezi Park, chanting "Tayyip, resign." Now police had cleared the square, and it was Erdo?an?s turn to show that not all Turkish citizens wanted him gone.

"Gezi Park and Taksim Square have been returned to the people," Erdo?an shouted, pacing across a large stage. He condemned foreign media, called the protesters terrorists, and reminded the crowd of what he and his party, the AKP, had done for them over the past decade. He addressed his female supporters, many of whom are religiously conservative and cover their heads, warning that the occupiers of Gezi Park were threatening "our sisters in headscarves." This was not a perfunctory aside. For years Turkey had a long-standing partial ban on the headscarf, but under Erdo?an things have changed: Women can now attend university in headscarves, and they are more visible in the workplace and in the streets. The prime minister knows that his religious supporters fear a new regime would reinstate the ban. And so he gives that shoutout to his base, and each headscarf in the crowd is a potent symbol of his bond with them.

At the same time, the Taksim Square protesters were hyping their own covered women. These were women who sat in the park in spite of things that might typically turn them off, like drinking. They were there even though many secularists see the headscarf as a direct challenge to the principles of Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk, Turkey?s first president and an inspiration to the opposition movement (portraits of Atat?rk hung throughout Gezi Park). To the protesters, these women?even in small numbers?represent a shifting tide in Turkey. A headscarf signifies religious devotion, but after 10 years of Erdo?an and more than three weeks of arrogance and police brutality, it may not indicate political affiliation.

In Turkey, the headscarf is a deeply controversial symbol, considered by many, rather superficially, to be evidence of the country's Islamization. For secular women, unveiling was an important part of a package of rights?including suffrage and the outlawing of polygamy?granted to them in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Atat?rk emphasized education for women, and the act of living in public?of unveiling and being seen?was considered an expression of modern, republican ideals.

But the strict secular ideology?some of which was codified after the 1980 military coup, when all opposition, including religious, was violently suppressed?marginalized women who wanted to cover. They viewed it as oppression, not liberation. Turkish anthropologist Esra ?zy?rek spent years interviewing Turkish citizens who were young at the founding of the Republic. One interview with a retired teacher named Vedia, which ?zy?rek writes about in her book Nostalgia for the Modern, shows how abrupt the shift was. "In those days in Izmir, if women went out in veils, young men would grab their veils and rip them off," Vedia said. "Or these women would have to pay a fine of sixty or seventy liras for veiling. After several months, veiling totally disappeared."

These days, a lot of women wear a headscarf in Turkey, including Erdo?an's wife and the wife of President Abdullah G?l. A thriving fashion industry caters to religious women, and they have taken their place among Turkey's growing middle class. They are, in short, integrated into society. But, as the past month has shown, they also still shoulder a great burden to be symbols on one side or the other of a divided nation.

"Most of the Western media, at the beginning, covered this as secular versus religious,? Zeynep Alemdar, a professor of international relations at Okan University who has been active in the protest movement, told me. ?But we have been trying to show that this is not about secularism." A reliable way of doing this is to claim the covered women in the crowd?both identifying them and welcoming them?and Alemdar views it as positive approach. It's certainly time-honored. ?This is not a new phenomenon,? Alemdar said. ?It?s not unique to the Gezi protesters to, let?s say, co-opt these women.?

That some see religious women as symbols (as opposed to, say, individuals, with nuanced views of politics and religion) might be why there were reports of headscarved women being harassed at the protests. During the second week, when the atmosphere of Gezi Park was still pretty upbeat, I met Deniz Bayram, a lawyer and feminist activist, by the Istanbul Feminist Collective tent. Turkish feminists tend to be divided on the headscarf issue?some see it as inherently oppressive while others view it as a matter of choice. Bayram was adamant that the feminist movement there was inclusive. "Women have been in the streets, in front of the TOMA trucks," she said (TOMAs are police trucks with mounted water cannons). Among these, she said, were "many" women in headscarves. To unite religious and secular women, the collective was working on a manifesto, part of which would denounce the harassment of religiously conservative women at the protests.

Erdo?an?s failures on women's rights may just help the opposition bring more of these women into its camp. He brazenly denounces abortion rights, famously suggested that women should populate Turkey by having three children, and has disregarded the high rate of violence against women. "When it comes to violence against women, secular and religious women are together," Alemdar said.

Still, Erdo?an has legitimate claims to being the liberator of covered women?lifting bans and normalizing the scarf?and for this many are reluctant to turn away from him. The day after Erdo?an's rally, I explored ?sk?dar, a conservative neighborhood on Istanbul's Asian side. I met Serife, a religious woman in her 40s who supports Erdo?an and succinctly revealed how the phrase ?women?s rights? means different things to different women. "He's given women a lot of rights. We are more free," she told me.

Nearby, in an upscale coffee shop, four female university students?political science majors?were eating sticky deserts in an end-of-term celebration. Three were covered in varying styles, one in a conservative brown scarf and long black sleeves. As students, access to education was a personal issue. "Now we can go to universities," a student named Kubra said. "Other students don't react to us as strongly." The girls were eager to talk about their political ideas?all were AKP supporters?and their religious beliefs, and just as eager to dispel the notion that their head coverings were concrete indicators of either.

I heard a similar sentiment from a 20-year-old sociology major named Sumeyye. Her grey headscarf was draped loosely around her neck, and a tight black headband kept her hairline out of sight. "My religion isn't political," she told me. "I am mostly an environmentalist." As a covered woman who doesn't fit the mold, she often feels out of place, so has been supporting the opposition from afar. "It sometimes bothers me that [leftists and other environmentalists] see me first as religious and second as environmentalist," she told me. "Most of my friends are like me."

Sumeyye is grateful to Erdo?an for lifting part of the headscarf ban, but she doesn?t support the AKP. "It's a false assumption that women in headscarves vote for the AKP," she told me. As an environmentalist, she objects to the development of Turkey (opposition to development is what started this whole protest movement), and, ironically, she feels that Erdo?an has not made liberating religious women a priority. Women still cannot wear a headscarf in many public buildings. So what does she plan to do about it? "Muslims don't get angry," she said. "We are patient. But now women in headscarves can get an education?and we think more critically." Which means that each side is going to have to start making a more sophisticated pitch.?

Israeli aircraft strike targets in Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli aircraft pounded targets in the Gaza Strip early Monday, the military said, after six rockets were fired at Israel from the territory.

The military said its aircraft struck two weapons storage facilities and a rocket launch site. No injuries were reported.

Rocket fire from Gaza has declined since a military campaign in November, before which militants were firing rockets on an almost daily basis. Sporadic fire still persists however.

No militant group claimed responsibility for the rocket launch, but Israel said it holds Hamas, which rules the coastal territory, accountable.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a total of six rockets were fired at Israel overnight, causing no damage or injuries. The military said two rockets were intercepted by the missile defense system known as "Iron Dome." The other four landed in open areas.

"Last night's rocket attack is an intolerable act of aggression against Israel and its civilians. Hamas is held accountable for all acts of terrorism deriving from the Gaza Strip," said military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner.

Meanwhile, Israeli police said that vandals slashed the tires of 21 cars in an Arab neighborhood of east Jerusalem. The vandals also scribbled slogans on nearby walls.

It is the latest in a wave of crimes linked to Jewish extremists that has targeted mosques, churches, monasteries, dovish Israeli groups and even Israeli military bases to protest what they perceive as the Israeli government's pro-Palestinian policies in the West Bank. Vandals call the attacks the "price tag" for the policies they oppose. Last week vandals struck an Arab village outside of Jerusalem that has been a model of coexistence in Israel.

Rosenfeld said police are investigating Monday's incident. He said no arrests have been made in the recent string of similar crimes.

Firefighter optimistic they can save South Fork

DEL NORTE, Colo. (AP) ? A massive wildfire threatening a tourist region in southwestern Colorado has grown to nearly 60 square miles, but officials said Saturday that the erratic blaze had slowed and they were optimistic they could protect the town of South Fork.

The fire's rapid advance prompted more than 400 evacuations Friday, and it could be days before people are allowed back into their homes, cabins and RV parks, fire crew spokeswoman Laura McConnell said.

Officials, meanwhile, closely monitored an arm of the blaze moving toward the neighboring town of Creede.

"We were very, very lucky," said Rio Grande County Commissioner Carla Shriver. "We got a free pass yesterday."

McConnell said no structures had been lost and the fire was still about 5 miles from the town.

The blaze had been fueled by dry, hot, windy weather and a stand of dead trees, killed by a beetle infestation. But the fire's spread had slowed by Saturday morning after the flames hit a healthy section of forest. Fire crews remained alert as more hot, dry and windy weather was forecast.

The wildfire, a complex of three blazes, remains a danger, officials said.

"The fire is very unpredictable," Shriver told evacuees at Del Norte High School, east of the fire. "They are saying they haven't quite seen one like this in years. There is so much fuel up there."

Smoke permeated the air Saturday in Del Norte, where a Red Cross shelter was set up for evacuees. Anticipating the mandatory South Fork evacuation would last for days, the Red Cross promised more supplies and portable showers.

New fire crews, meanwhile, descended from other areas to join more than 32 fire engines stationed around South Fork, with hoses and tankers at the ready. Firefighters also worked to move potential fuel, such as lawn furniture, propane tanks and wood piles, away from homes and buildings.

The town of Creede's 300 residents were under voluntary evacuation orders.

North Carolina talent takes the stage at the American Dance Festival ...

Every summer since 1978, Durham, NC has become a place of inspiration and a place where dreams are born and realized for dancers from all over the world. Choreographers, dancers and companies travel from the United Kingdom, Canada, New York City, etc., to take to the stage or studio at the American Dance Festival. Those of us living in the Triangle find ourselves in a vibrant international hub celebrating the greatest dance talent in the world ? Paul Taylor, Pilobolus, Scottish Dance Theatre, Shen Wei Dance Arts. It makes a lover of the arts glad to be a North Carolinian.

This year, audiences also had the opportunity to see work created by our own neighbors, choreographers who are part of North Carolina?s dance community. Together with the North Carolina Dance Festival, an annual adjudicated tour to cities around North Carolina, the American Dance Festival welcomed five local choreographers to the main stage at Reynolds Industries Theater.

The program was a sampling of diversity in North Carolina?s dance community. Each work was a beautiful example of smart, honest and timeless choreography.

Featured choreographers were Lindsey Kelley and Mindy Upin, John Gamble, Cara Hagan, and Natalie Marrone.

Kelley and Upin created and performed A Tribute and Reflection of the Relationship, a funny and endearing dance that felt like an authentic look at their own shared memories. It was set to a medley of Queen songs, and even with its intimacy among the two specific friends, it could have been any two friends who have sung [badly] along together to a song on the radio. The pair went from stillness to bursts of grand movement, but what made the dance most memorable were the little things, like making faces, bike-riding and a little kiss on a pony-tail. Watching the never-grow-up friendship journey was a sentimental and nostalgic experience.

Gamble?s Changeant d?habit de Sexe was set to cabaret music by Jacques Brel. Seven women dressed in dapper men?s attire and invoked European male impersonators in the late 1800?s. It was an intriguing dance of mostly pas de deux, with the seventh woman adding tension by disrupting the pairs, and perhaps exerting control.

Worlds Apart, by Hagan, was a series of four seemingly unrelated stories told by regular people. The dance was a moving visual expression of the storytellers? feelings and linked all of them together with the common thread of the dancer-human. From the woman discriminated against in her church who said she thought the idea behind Christianity was to love one another to the girl who saw her father cry in Pizza Hut, to the old friends who each swore the other was the most kind, the selected stories were examples of the joys and challenges we all face. Hagan?s work is comparable to literary fiction, with a theme you may not recognize or appreciate until the dance is over. It?s the sort of work that gains relevance in your mind as you continue to think about it the next day.

The final dance of the evening was Strega Stories Part II: Revolt by Marrone, in collaboration with the dancers. The dance was based on interviews with Italian Americans who have participated in traditional healing methods of southern Italy. It was visually and musically exciting to follow what felt like a band of gypsies on their journey. Ritual, tradition and healing were apparent themes, expressed in circles with a dancer animated by a hovering and shaking hand. The dance developed from a slow journey to traditional music to a tribal drum-circle kind of dance, reminiscent of a Grateful Dead show, down to the swirling skirts and dreadlocks. The scene was so vibrant it was often hard to believe there were only four dancers on stage.

You don?t have to wait to visit New York City to see fresh and original work on stage. From just about anywhere in North Carolina you are a short drive from dance artists dedicated to creating expressions of something true and relevant.

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators again took to streets in several Brazilian cities Saturday after the president broke a long silence to promise reforms, but the early protests were smaller and less violent than those of recent days.

Police estimated that about 60,000 demonstrators gathered in a central square in the city of Belo Horizonte, largely to denounce legislation that would limit the power of federal prosecutors to investigate crimes in a country where many are fed up with the high rate of robberies and killings. Many fear the law would also hinder attempts to jail corrupt politicians and other powerful figures.

In Belo Horizonte, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who tried to pass through a barrier and hurled rocks at a car dealership.

President Dilma Rousseff, a former leftist guerrilla who was tortured during Brazil's military dictatorship, made a televised 10-minute appearance on Friday night backing the right to peaceful protest but sharply condemning violence, vandalism and looting.

She promised to be tougher on corruption and said she would meet with peaceful protesters, governors and the mayors of big cities to create a national plan to improve urban transportation and use oil royalties for investments in education. Much of the anger behind the protests has been aimed at costly bus fares, high taxes and poor public services such as schools and health care.

Many Brazilians, shocked by a week of protests and violence, hoped that Rousseff's words would soothe tensions and help avoid more violence, but not all were convinced by her promises of action.

A rapidly growing crowd blocked Sao Paulo's main business street, Avenida Paulista, to press their demands.

Victoria Villela, a 21-year-old university who joined the crowd, said she was "frustrated and exhausted by the endless corruption of our government."

"It was good Dilma spoke, but this movement has moved too far, there was not much she could really say. All my friends were talking on Facebook about how she said nothing that satisfied them. I think the protests are going to continue for a long time and the crowds will still be huge."

Around her, fathers held young boys aloft on their shoulders, older women gathered in clusters with their faces bearing yellow and green stripes, the colors of Brazil's flag.

In the northeastern city of Salvador, where Brazil's national football team was set to play Italy in a match for the Confederations Cup, some 5,000 protesters gathered about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the stadium, shouting demands for better schools and transportation and denouncing heavy spending on next year's World Cup.

About 1,000 demonstrators trying to reach the stadium were kept at bay by police firing rubber bullets and using pepper spray.

Rodrigo Costa, a 32-year-old civil engineer in the city, said that it was good just to see a popular movement force "a head of state to go on TV and talk about the problems of the country."

"She didn't touch on all the issues that the people want to see improved," Costa said. "But I think that just in general it was a good message."

Brazil's news media, which had blasted Rousseff in recent days for her lack of response to the protests, seemed largely unimpressed with her careful speech, but noted the difficult situation facing a government trying to understand a mass movement with no central leaders and a flood of demands.

With "no objective information about the nature of the organization of the protests," wrote Igor Gielow in a column for Brazil's biggest newspaper, Folha de S. Paulo, "Dilma resorted to an innocuous speech to cool down spirits."

At its height, some 1 million anti-government demonstrators took to the streets nationwide on Thursday night with grievances ranging from public services to the billions of dollars spent preparing for international sports events.

Outside the stadium in Belo Horizonte where Mexico and Japan met in a Confederations Cup game, Dadiana Gamaleliel, a 32-year-old physiotherapist, held up a banner that read: "Not against the games, in favor of the nation."

"I am protesting on behalf of the whole nation because this must be a nation where people have a voice ... we don't have a voice anymore," she said.

She said Rousseff's speech wouldn't "change anything."

"She spoke in a general way and didn't say what she would do," she said. "We will continue this until we are heard."

Social media and mass emails were buzzing with calls for a general strike next week. But Brazil's two largest unions, the Central Workers Union and the Union Force, said they knew nothing about such an action, though they do support the protests.

At the protest in Salvador, 32-year-old public worker Mariana Santos said that demonstrators want Rousseff and the rest of Brazil's government to be held accountable if they fail to keep their promises.

"Dilma said she was going to make a pact with unions, students, with everyone, to fix things," Santos said. "If they hold the World Cup and she has not done what she said she will do, the people may decide they don't want the Cup."
